UF researcher examines brain injury risk among military spouses who face domestic violence

A University of Florida doctoral student led a pilot study of 125 military spouses who experienced intimate partner violence, finding that those who also suffered head trauma reported higher rates of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. The research highlights how physical brain injuries from abuse — often caused by choking, strangulation, or blows to the skull — are frequently mistaken for or masked by mental health symptoms. The student, Sam Goldstein, is scheduled to present the findings to the Florida National Guard on Oct. 29 during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
