UF engineer uses AI to give cyclists a voice in roadway design

A University of Florida assistant professor in the Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering is building a tool called StreetDesignAI that uses large language models to simulate feedback from four distinct cyclist types, helping roadway designers better account for cyclists’ needs. The system, funded by the National Science Foundation, lets designers overlay hypothetical street changes onto real street-view images and receive updated responses from AI agents trained on crowd-sourced cyclist data. The research was published in the proceedings of the 2026 ACM Designing Interactive Systems Conference.
