Gainesville breaks ground on hurricane-hardened SW Public Safety Center

Construction has begun on the Southwest Public Safety Center near Archer Road and Interstate 75, a 29,754-square-foot facility that will house a four-bay fire station, a Public Works warehouse, and a community meeting room. The project is the third groundbreaking in three months under the city’s Safe By Design Initiative, a $60 million effort funded through a voter-approved one-cent sales surtax. The center is designed to remain operational during major storms, and Fire Station #9 is expected to relocate there from its current modular building in Butler Plaza North when construction wraps up in late 2027.
